The Main Library of Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce was established in 1969, together with the development of the Higher Teacher's Training School. Holdings have grown over the years, and now consist of approximately 450 000 items, including books, annual sets of periodicals and special collections. The library also ensures access to numerous electronic journals and databases. The collection covers all disciplines of the humanities and sciences studied in the University. Library holdings are divided into several parts; in the main building, on 16 Lesna Street, there is only the Lending Department (with a wide collection of subjects), and also the Main, Reference and Special Collections reading rooms. Branch reading rooms, with specialised collections, are located together with particular faculties or institutes (see: Library Departments)

The electronic storage of the library catalogues started in 1992. In 1999/2000, an integrated computer system, ALEPH, was introduced. For the time being, the online catalogue contains about 300 000 records of books and periodicals. The rest of the collection requires searching in card catalogues.
We participate in shared cataloguing in NUKAT, the national union catalogue of Polish academic and research libraries.

According to library regulations, one needs a library card to order and borrow books. The following groups are entitled to arrange a library card: the staff and students (including post-graduate students and candidates for doctorates) of Jan Kochanowski University , and the staff and students of Kielce University of Technology, Higher School of Public Administration in Kielce and the Theological Seminary in Kielce, and other persons with the consent of the director of the Main Library.
The library card is valid in a current academic year and can be renewed. Everyone can use library resources on site, after buying a reading room card (valid for one year) or paying a single fee.
